23 Interior Design Trends You’ll Be Seeing Explode in 2023:
Can you believe it? 2023 already! You know what that means…. New interior design trends!! In today’s blog post, I will be showing you 23 interior design trends that will explode in 2023.
Before I get started though, I just wanted to say… First of all, happy new year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season! Second of all, please note that the world of interior design trends is constantly changing. They certainly do not only change once per year. In fact, they change and evolve daily. This is why I find it super important that you do not base your home decor solely on interior design trends. Instead, base your home’s style on what you love and want to see in your space. The interior design trends should be nothing more than a styling guide to help you pick what you like… or don’t like. This will help you in creating a unique home that is personalized to you and your family’s needs, wants, and character traits. Alright, now that I got that little disclaimer out of the way, let’s dive right in! Shall we?
Rooms and Layouts
Hobby and Self-Care Spaces
A big focus on hobbies and self-care will be seen through interior design in 2023. Since the pandemic, many people have learned the importance of taking care of themselves– whether it be physically or mentally. This trend has continued since people now stay home more than they used to. Many people will begin to dedicate little corners or rooms to something that will help them recharge. Whether it be an art corner or an indoor sauna, I hope you use this trend to its full potential!
Butler Pantries
What the heck is a butler pantry, you might ask? A butler pantry is essentially a walk-in pantry… but, better! Instead of having just shelves and cabinets for food storage, they also have food-prepping amenities. These food-prepping amenities include counter space, appliances, and oftentimes a sink. You can basically do all of your cooking in the butler pantry, and leave your actual kitchen for show and entertaining! If you love to host parties or have lots of kids, this interior design trend should definitely be brought into consideration when remodeling or freshly building a home.
Closed Floor Plans
Wait! What?! No more open floor plans? Yup! You read it right! Open floor plans are not the way of the world anymore. Instead, a lot of people building new homes will be designing closed floor plans. You may ask, but why? Although open floor plans are great because they can make a space feel significantly bigger, they often don’t allow for much privacy. Once again, after the pandemic, many people realized what an inconvenience open floor plans were. With everybody working in the same room, things can get intense quickly. This led to lots of stress for parents when there was a work meeting they had to answer in the same room that their kids were trying to do school. For that reason, many people have begun to welcome closed floor plans back into their lives. If you are looking to build a home, I recommend rethinking that open floor plan. You never know when you may have to shut yourself in a room for a work meeting!
Unique, Personalized Spaces
Who said that a room has to be a bedroom or has to be a bathroom? Why not have an in-home movie theater or a lap pool room instead? Many interior designers will be encouraging dedicating a room to serve a unique, personalized purpose this year. This can literally be anything that the imagination desires. Arcade room, game room, library, you name it! This space is for you and your family to enjoy!
Organization
Although organizing is pretty much always in trend, there will be a greater push towards living in a clutter-free home this year. There are many ways that this can be accomplished in anybody’s home. Buying more baskets for children to keep toys in or hiring a professional organizer to help you fix that closet can make a world of a difference. Organizing will not only change the look of your home but the feel of your home too. Need help getting started? How about you start with your clothes drawers? Make sure to go check out my blog post that walks you through the entire process of clothes drawer organization.
Multi-Functional Spaces
Who said that a whole room only has to serve one purpose? Not me! In 2023, it is time to maximize every square foot of our homes. Every room will be used to its full potential. Offices can also be bedrooms, living rooms can also be libraries, and dining rooms can also be bars! For all my people living in apartments or small homes, this one’s for you!
Color Pallets and Wall Treatments
Oceanic Color Pallet
In 2023, a strong emphasis is being placed on bringing natural elements indoors. Oceanic color pallets will be a huge hit in 2023. Lots of light blues, dark blues, light greens, and even hints of pastel pink work together in the 2023 interior design to mimic the colors of the ocean. If you are a sunny weather, beachgoer, or tropical paradise kind of person like myself, then maybe consider adding this trendy color pallet to your home decor.
Bold Color Pallets
Instead of lights, bright, and lots of neutrals, 2023 is bringing back the bold colors. There are no specific rules or colors when it comes to this trend except… pick whatever colors you want. Go wild! Paint your cabinets a crazy shade of teal blue or paint your accent wall pink. The goal is to create a design that represents you.
Monochromatic Effect
Okay, so you may be wondering why somebody would want to paint their walls, ceilings, and doors, and trim the same exact color. Although it seems unthinkable, painting everything the same color can make a space feel way bigger than it actually is. This is all done by the way the human eye perceives shadows and depth. Painting your walls and ceilings the same color will make the room appear endless. There are no specific guidelines on what colors to choose. But, I would have to say that darker colors create a much more dramatic effect than white or beige would.
Lime Washes and Plaster
If you are looking to create a cozy, comfortable space, I have the trend for you! Lime washes and plaster add a subtle texture to your walls that makes the whole room instantly feel cozier. Although this trend stepped into the shadows for quite some time, it is officially back as of 2023.
Elements, Appeals, and Feels
Natural Light
I mean, come on? Who doesn’t want their space to have lots of natural lighting? Not only is it more affordable (due to using less electricity), but it also makes a space feel open and airy. The bigger the windows, the better! Windows for the past couple of years have begun to get bigger. Now that 2023 has arrived, they’re as large as they’ve ever been!
Natural Elements
Interior design trends for 2023 will see an increase in the use of natural elements throughout a home. Walls, doors, window trims, light fixtures, etc., will be made of more natural materials. Wood and stone will be used more and synthesized materials will be used less. If you prefer a natural and organic look to a room, then this will be a fun trend for you to jump in on. Adding some more woven baskets, pottery, and wooden accents to your space will help emphasize the natural look that you are going for.
Indoor Gardening
Nature, nature, nature, is the theme of 2023. The more natural and raw, the better. One way to bring more nature into your home is by adding some houseplants. Many 2023 interior designers will be including lots of houseplants and green walls in their designs. Oh no! Do you have a bad reputation for growing plants? Don’t worry! I have you covered! Click here to read my blog post that gives a list of ten houseplants that require minimal care and effort to grow. That way, you can jump in on this 2023 interior design trend and not have to worry about that brown thumb of yours.
Dark, Warm Wood Tones
The time has come to step away from the stark grays and whites that ruled the interior design world for a while. And, guess what? The very opposite has taken its place! Dark, warm wood tones will be implemented in more furnishings, floors, cabinets, and even some accent walls. The more natural wood tones you have in your home, the better. If your home is stuck in the grays and whites and is not looking to remodel anytime soon, don’t worry! Your space is still workable. You can find a middle ground between the grays and whites by adding hints of taupes, greiges, and semi-warm colors into your smaller decor items. This will help balance the cool tones out without breaking the bank.
Gold, Copper, and Bronze
To add to the warm looks of homes in 2023, there will be a 180 with the metals. Less chrome and steel will be used in lighting, furniture legs, and cabinetry hardware. And, more gold, copper, and bronze will be used instead. If you can’t afford or are not looking to change your home this year, this is a super easy way to accomplish keeping with the trends. Change your cabinet hardware, add a new lamp to your bedroom, or buy a copper teapot, and your home will instantly be in style.
Marble
Although marble is considered timeless, the interior design trends for 2023 will see this material used in excess. Instead of backsplashes and open shelving made of wood, lots of people will start to take their countertop marble and extend it up towards the back of the wall. Sometimes, if money and labor can afford, small shelves of marble will also be created as a stopping point for the marble-cladded wall. Although marble is not a cheap investment, it instantly will make your home look more luxurious. The best part about this trend is that marble never goes out of style. So, if you are remodeling or building, I would consider adding a bit of marble into your design– even if it’s in a small way. It will add both value and visual appeal while lasting for years to come.
Thick Kitchen Counters
Okay, so we’ve seen the waterfall countertops. But, the 2023 kitchen design is taking it up another notch. Thick countertops will start becoming the norm. I’m not talking about your standard 1 ¼ inch countertops– or even your 2-inch countertops! I’m talking about countertop thicknesses reaching up to 4 inches! If you are a fan of luxurious materials and furnishings, then this is a great way to instantly give you that look.
Furnishings and Patterns
Checkers
Say, what? Checkers? Yup! Checkers come and go in interior design like birds migrate from the north to the south. They come, they go, they come, and they go again! For 2023 interior design, checkers have come back. Whether you get checkered bathroom floors, add a checkered accent wall, or maybe just add a checkered throw blanket to your bed, you have this trend covered! The great part about patterns in interior design is that the price range is vast. You can add a trendy pattern to your home in both large and small ways.
Fewer Lines, More Curves
Interior design trends in 2023 will see fewer squares and rectangles and a lot more circles and ovals. More furniture, wall art, and rugs will have rounded edges. The idea behind this trend is that curves create a sense of infinity. They can help make a space feel bigger than it actually is. So, if you happen to live in a small apartment, this is a great way to make your space look and feel larger. Consider getting a curved couch, or adding some curved wall art. It will immediately make your home feel bigger.
Thrifting and Upcycling
Since 2023 interior design is largely focused on creating unique, one-of-a-kind spaces. There will be a large hit on thrift stores, flea markets, and resale stores. The reason behind this is that people will be able to find unique pieces that are timeless. Timeless pieces will set their space apart from others. So, instead of just hitting up Target for a bedroom makeover, consider hitting up a thrift store or resale shop instead. You never know what you may find!
Dark Furniture
Shew, isn’t that a relief for parents out there? No more white, cream, and beige furniture for 2023! Instead, there will be a large hit on dark furniture. A lot of darker brown, dark gray, and black sofas, loveseats, and chairs will be sold. If you have light furniture right now, do not worry! There are plenty of other ways to make your home trendy. But, if you are looking to purchase new furniture, then maybe consider a dark couch instead of a light couch. I especially recommend this if you are furniture shopping, and you have kids.
Fun Light Fixtures
Instead of your traditional chandeliers and pendant lights, the 2023 interior design will see more quirky, out-of-the-box light fixtures. Unique shapes, textures, and colors of light fixtures will be seen throughout newly renovated homes. If you are looking to add some interest to your home, maybe buy a quirky lamp base or some interesting wall sconces. It’s all about setting your home apart from others!
I hope this blog post helps give you insight into what to expect with 2023 interior design trends. As I mentioned above, do not base your home’s style on what is trending and in style. Base your home on what you want and what you like. Similar to a painting, your home is a representation of you. So, design your space to mimic your character and personality. If you like bold colors, go all out. If you like soothing, peaceful spaces, create a book nook. The options are endless. Whether building a new home, remodeling your current home, or just looking to freshen things up a bit, make your spaces yours.
